CALIFORNIA COAST WORKSHOP, Friday 1 PM–5 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 AM–4:30 PM. All communication will be by email. When you register a letter detailing the workshop and a check list on what to bring, will be sent to you.

Enjoy painting the coast simply and beautifully in watercolor. In this, Robert’s annual coastal painting workshop, you will learn how to easily create coastal landscapes, ocean scenes with waves, cliffs, rocks, beaches, bathers, distant islands, sea gulls, and other coastal features.  You will paint five paintings at free coastal sites between Half Moon Bay and Pacifica during this weekend.


You will watch Robert demonstrate how to:

  1. have fun painting coastal landscapes outdoors

  2. paint breaking waves

  3. create strong colorful compositions

  4. create shortcuts for waves and ocean movement

  5. paint distant ocean

  6. master your whites for crashing waves and ocean splash

  7. how to insure that your paintings will succeed every time

  8. create entrances and pathways in your paintings

  9. paint rocks and beaches

  10. put people in your paintings

  11. paint a horizontal horizon

  12. and much, much more


We will meet at at Rockaway Beach in Pacifica on Friday, August 18 at 1 PM.  Since we will be painting outdoors, be sure to bring a hat , a jacket, some kind of stool or portable chair, or something to sit on.  The coastal temperatures can vary a lot.  Be prepared for 3 days of painting outdoors at different coastal sites from Half Moon Bay to Pacifica. NATURAL BRIDGES STATE BEACH

SANTA CRUZ

Join this fabulous watercolor workshop at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz.  Robert will demonstrate and there will be reviews of everyone's work.  

You will learn how to:

  1. have fun painting outdoors

  2. compose a strong painting

  3. paint on a larger sheet

  4. discover color intuition

  5. pay attention to values

  6. use lost and found edges

  7. how to add mystery and drama to a painting

  8. apply spacial planes in plein air painting

  9. effectively use warm and cool color in a painting

  10. put people and birds in your coastal paintings

  11. do a quick field study for your painting

  12. and much much more


You will move to simplify your painting skill to create clean, fresh, colorful, spontaneous paintings.  You will paint and draw this famous beach landscape and the people who will be there that day. 

Meet at Natural Bridges State Beach Saturday, September 16 at 9:30 AM at the south west corner of the State Beach parking lot. From there we will walk to the site.  Since we will be painting outdoors be sure to bring a hat, a jacket, something to sit on and your lunch.  The coastal temperatures can vary a lot.  Be prepared for a full day of painting and drawing.
