There is a tennis court and barbecue areas.  The workshop includes all watercolor (or oil painting if you prefer) and drawing instruction and demonstrations, private and group instruction, some materials, and all land transportation on Molokai.  Fee does not include meals, airfare from and to the mainland, or airfare from and to the other Hawaiian islands.  Register NOW!  Space available until a "wait-list-only" notice is posted on the web site or in a future newsletter.

It is loads of fun and you will gain confidence and skill with drawing and watercolor that will amaze you.   Traveling to Molokai is going back in time.  Molokai is old Hawaii, the way the other islands looked 75 years ago.  You will find Molokai friendly and peaceful, a perfect place to relax and paint and draw without distraction.  Molokai has the highest cliffs in the Pacific, pastures, rain forest, waterfalls, beautiful beaches and palm trees.  To register, send your check to the address below.  And book your flights early for the best price.  Please register before October 1, 2017 as that is the date we need to lock in our condominium reservations.

In Monterosso, we will stay 4 nights at Hotel Villa Steno, an attractive and friendly, family run hotel, surrounded by lemon, orange and olive trees. www.villasteno.com/en/

May 6-8, Fri-SunCINQUE TERRE

This region is rich with drawing and painting opportunities.  Cinque Terre is 5 tiny villages that cling precariously to the rocky coast.   In this magnificent land sloping steeply to the sea. There are three ways to get around: by rail, by boat, and by foot.  Because this is a national park, you can’t access the Cinque Terre by car.  You can take the local trains to Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. There is limited boat service from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, Vernazza, and Manarola (Corniglia is high on a steep cliff).  Vernazza is a great place to paint and a wonderful place to have lunch at one of the several sea food restaurants, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Tickets for the local train are inexpensive and easy to purchase at the rail station in Monterosso. These train tickets are not included in your itinerary as some people will travel by train, others will travel by boat or walk between the towns. The walks are very picturesque and many of you will want to stop and draw or paint on these hikes.

May 9, MondayFLORENCE

We will take the train to Florence today.  We will have a painting stop in Pisa.

In Florence, a coach & driver will take us to stay 4 nights at Hotel Berchielli, located in the historical centre of the city. Time to draw and paint in the “eternal city” on your own.  Rome has many personalities: ancient Rome of the imperial ruins; Catholic Rome of the Vatican and churches; the Renaissance city of Michelangelo and Raphael or the Baroque of Bernini and Borromini.

On Sunday we may want to visit the Porta Portese Flea Market to see a different side of Rome.  It is a huge flea market with thousands of stalls selling everything from rare books, clothes, shoes, T shirts, scarves, food, old prints etc. It is very busy and a lot of fun. Keep your valuables safe and wear your haggling hat.  There will be some fun street entertainers there.

While we are in Rome, I am going to try and arrange a sight seeing visit to the American Academy in Rome where I spent almost 2 years, for those that are interested.

"Robert gives helpful specific tips as well as a general orientation to the philosophy of plein air watercolor painting."
Sophie Torrance (Yosemite Art Center Class)

The poem that I recited at the end of the 2007 workshop is below.  RRD

Being an Artist of Life

We stand before a grand canvas: our life.
We prepare the colors of  our thoughts--rich or poor, false or true.
We must be ready to feel the warm and cold hues of our emotions--our fear and joy, our love and sadness.

In our hands we hold the finest of brushes: time, the instrument which allows us to express our world of experience in each and every spontaneous stroke.
We visualize this grand canvas as we want it to be, and commit to painting our image with integrity.
Each shading and shape, each color and hue; each smudge, drip, slip, tone, shadow, and value will be determined by us.
We are responsible for each stroke of our brush.

And although others may misunderstand or criticize, if we stand for who we are and what we do, most will respect us and admire our courage.

And when this grand canvas, our life, is finished, may the world in some small or large way be a better place.
May those who have touched our canvas with their eyes and hearts, grow to know the joy and wonder of being an artist of life.
We paint each day,
And we create every now!
